12 1869 The scrapbook in this collection was initially titled by the museum, "A Collection of 49 Photographs, 35 Sketches, and a Map Showing View of Parts of the South America and the East." However, the scrapbook's contents document the only cruises of HMS Shannon, which some have called Great Britain's first armoured cruiser. The ship's first, and rather abortive, cruise was to China, with a short preliminary service on the Mediterranean Station, principally around Naples. Photographs in the scrapbook show scenes of the Suez Canal, Port Said, and Cairo, indicating the ship may have transited Suez on its way to the East. Watercolors in the collection contain represent both Chinese and Japanese subjects. Shannon was then recalled, decommissioned, refit, and reassigned to ship's second cruise, from July 1879 to 1881, cruising the coast of Chile during the years of the War of the Pacific. Art works representing some of the ports of Chile and Peru and battlefields of the war on land are present. Of note is a tracing of the plans for, and a watercolor of, the ironclad Huáscar of the Chilean Navy. A reproduction of a letter by Carlos Rand describing the first attack led by Huáscar on the Peruvian port of Callao gives a vivid portrayal of a town and a fleet under bombardment. - Two items in the scrapbook, dated 1869, are likely engravings of drawings originally done that year. The engravings likely date to 1879-1881, while Shannon was in the Pacific. MS0729
